Life Insurance(s) & Disability

Clarkson University offers life insurance and disability plan options to eligible employees. Some coverage is paid for by the University, while other options may be purchased voluntarily. All coverage is insured by the University's life and disability carrier. Employees can add all details including their beneficiaries in the benefits portal.

Life Insurance Policies

  • 100% Clarkson Provided
  • One Times (1X) annual salary to a maximum of $70,000, but not less than $17,500
  • Eligible for coverage on date of hire

Disability Policies

Clarkson University offers disability insurance plan options to eligible employees.

Short-Term Disability

  • Own personal illness
  • State Program offers supplemental pay (no job protection); Clarkson offers a program above NYS
  • Paid by New York Life
    • 60% (Basic Short-Term Disability – Clarkson Paid) –or- 
    • 80% (Short-Term Disability 20% Buy Up – Employee Paid)
    • Employees can supplement 40% or 20% with personal time (vacation, special personal or sick days) to reach 100%
  • 180 days allowed
  • Can be used with:
    • Family Medical Leave Act
    • Caregiver/Secondary Leave – only available should your medical provider takes you out of work prior to delivery date
  • In this case you would be on Short-Term Disability until the baby is born and then your CU provider caregiver time will begin
  • Employees could be approved for Short-Term Disability but NOT for FMLA, NYS PFL or Caregiver/Secondary Leave
  • Please Note – employees Do Not accrue vacation time while out on leave
  • Benefits remain active while on short-term disability; payment arrangements need to be arranged with HR

Clarkson University offers disability insurance plan options to eligible employees.

  • Own personal illness
  • 50% Clarkson / 50% Employee Paid 
  • Coverage only if employee elects to participate
  • Full-time employees are eligible the 1st month after one year of service
  • Monthly benefit would be 60% of your pre-disability earnings (based on amount earned prior to disability) to a maximum of $5400 a month
  • Begins after 180 days of disability
  • Benefits (medical, dental, vision, etc.) remain active while on long-term disability for employees with the intent to return; payment arrangements need to be arranged with HR. Benefits would terminate and COBRA would be available if an employee is unable to return. 
  • Long-Term Disability payments will continue as long as you are disabled for the rest of your life up until death. Clarkson will continue to make contributions to your 403(b) pension plan.
